Why email sequences matter

Social media posts disappear in hours. Blog posts take months to rank. But an email lands directly in someone's inbox and stays there until they read it. Email marketing consistently delivers the highest ROI of any marketing channel, averaging $36 for every $1 spent. The key is automation. You write the emails once, set up the triggers, and they send themselves to the right people at the right time forever.

The three essential sequences

Every business needs at minimum three automated email sequences. A welcome sequence for new subscribers. A nurture sequence that builds trust over time. And a post-purchase sequence that creates repeat customers.

Welcome sequence (3 emails over 3 days)

Email 1 delivers immediately after signup. It thanks them for subscribing, delivers any promised lead magnet, and sets expectations for what they will receive. Email 2 arrives the next day and shares your story or mission. Why does your business exist? What problem are you solving? Email 3 arrives on day 3 and provides a quick win. Give them something actionable they can implement immediately.

Nurture sequence (5 emails over 2 weeks)

This sequence educates and builds trust. Each email focuses on one topic related to your product. Share tips, case studies, common mistakes to avoid, and behind-the-scenes insights. The goal is to demonstrate your expertise so that when you eventually present your product, they already trust you.

Post-purchase sequence (4 emails over 2 weeks)

Email 1 confirms the purchase and provides setup instructions. Email 2 checks in after 3 days to see if they need help. Email 3 asks for a review or testimonial after 7 days. Email 4 presents an upsell or cross-sell after 14 days.
